Nanci France-Vaz
Portraits
Nanci France-Vaz is nationally acclaimed contemporary realist portrait/figurative painter. Her paintings are infused with light and have a life like quality. Nanci’s unique cinematic style incorporates her acting/dance background into her paintings. There is a story behind the figure and face, which evokes a strong human presence in the environment.
The artist received her BFA at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and has exhibited in many group shows which include “Women Painting Women”, Masters Showcase for Huntington’s Petite Gallery, Hersch Fine Art Gallery “Loved and Observed”, and two solo exhibits at The Masters Octave in Keyport, NJ. In 2003, she was selected to be studio assistant to James Childs at the Drawing Academy of the Atlantic. Mr Childs, an Ives Gamell student, was very instrumental cultivating her skills in classical realism and the Boston School of Painting, at the beginning of her career. In 2006, the artist was accepted into the copy program at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to copy a Rembrandt in the Rembrandt Gallery. The teachers that influenced her skills and techniques are Michael Grimaldi, Dan Thompson, John Frederick Murray, and Marvin Mattelson.
Nanci is a member of the Portrait Society of America, Allied Artists of America, The Art Renewal Center, Oil Painters of America, an elected member of the American Artists Professional League and a Monmouth Arts Partner in New Jersey. Nanci France-Vaz is represented by Portraits North.

Watercolors
My paintings are the dreams I meant to write down before my alarm clock went off. They are freeze frames of the quiet moments that I steal for myself in the middle of a bustling day. Bright reflections of rain on asphalt streets after a summer shower, pedestrians expertly weaving in and out of traffic on their way to work, or simply a silent pause before crossing a hectic street. These are some of the moments that inspire me to create bold impressions. Watercolor is my medium. It best captures the mood and mystery of an energetic city.
As a native of Brooklyn, New York, I spent afternoons with my friends walking the neighborhoods, sketching streets with chipped curbs and peeling street signs. I learned early on to capture the scene quickly, stripping away all distractions before the light changed the shadows. I knew it was time to go home when the sky began to darken, the street lights came on and I had trouble seeing my sketch pad. My paintings are my dreams.
